It can be sociable too - join a local course and meet new people (you'll be forced to talk to each other), or maybe get in contact with native speakers locally who can help you out in the pub. Apart from local courses, you could buy some books and CDs, or start out cheaply with some online lessons. Language can keep people apart, but can also bring them together if you have the right attitude.
